About the Artist
Biography:
Born in Kansas City, Missouri, raised in Houston, Sally Schoonover Mayfield
Discovered her love of art at an early age. Encouraged by her high school
Art teacher and with private lessons, she was selected to design her Lamar
High senior yearbook. Her college degree was in art and philosophy. Co-owning
The Sporting Life Gallery in Houston kept her connected to the art world.
After raising her family, she began spending her summers in Colorado and
Painting full time. This opened new avenues of exploration with color and style,
And led to being featured in galleries in the area during the 1990’s.
Pursuing her art in Houston today, she continues to explore and expand her
Horizons by painting abstracts in acrylic and oil. She has shown in a number
Of juried shows in Houston and Richmond, Texas and has had several
shows at the Daily Review Café in Houston. She has also been in a group
show at Archway Gallery, Houston in the fall of 2008.
Artist Statement:
I fell in love with the Southwest. Everything about it is different. The light
Is different, the clouds are different and certainly the landscape is different.
My main source of inspiration comes from the colors found in the desert and
The Indian culture that is so much apart of the Southwest. From that exploration
I developed my own style of painting and now consider myself a colorist first
And foremost. Living in Houston, my art has shifted to abstract forms, yet
Still captures the colors and rhythms of the Southwest. Painting brings a
Freedom to my spirit and a joy to my life.
The medium is oil or acrylic on canvas.
The technique is movement in color.
The bolder the better.
